The start of the school year is both exciting and overwhelming. For school-based occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists, it’s a time of schedule building, relationship forming, and setting the stage for student success.
Whether you’re supporting one school or several, these tips can help make your first month smoother and more productive.
1. Master Your Schedule Before It Masters You
One of our OTs shared this tip:
“I prepare for the new school year by gathering master schedules and a list of my students’ teachers so that I can build my schedule. I set up a master list of students, service type, and IEP dates.” ~Suzanne
This foundational task helps avoid double-booking and supports compliance from the start.
2. Prep a Mobile Toolkit
If you’re working across multiple schools or rooms, organize your therapy bag/cart early. Include visuals, fidgets, fine motor tools, and progress monitoring sheets so you’re ready to go wherever your students are.
3. Prioritize Relationship Building
Make time in those first few weeks to meet with teachers, counselors, and support staff. Learn the school culture and how to align your support with the team’s routines and priorities.
4. Observe First, Plan Second
Don’t rush into therapy plans without context. Use early sessions to observe in the classroom, connect with staff, and understand how students function across settings.
5. Know Your IEPs… and Your Limits
Skim each IEP with a focus on service frequency, goals, accommodations, and communication needs. Then, be realistic with your schedule. Advocate early for manageable caseloads and smart service delivery models.
