Say It with Spring: Engaging Language Activities for SLPs

At AOT, we believe learning should be meaningful, and sometimes, that means getting a little muddy, messy, and creative. Spring brings endless opportunities for school-based speech-language pathologists to engage students with natural, real-world language activities. 

Here are some SLP favorites to bring spring into your therapy sessions: 

1. Weather Words
   Use Spring weather (rain, sun, wind) to teach descriptive language. Try sentence starters like: “Today it is ___,” or compare days with “It is sunnier than yesterday.”
2. Bug Talk
   Whether it’s plastic toys, books, or the real deal outside, use bugs to target labeling, verbs (“The ant is crawling”), and answering WH- questions.
3. Spring Story Time
   Choose seasonal books like “Planting a Rainbow” or “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. Pair reading with vocabulary work and sequencing tasks.
4. Flower Craft Directions
   Have students follow multi-step directions to make a flower craft. This targets receptive language, sequencing, and following instructions in a hands-on way. Check out this free flower-themed activity!
5. What’s in the Garden?
   Create a mystery bag of spring items (e.g., seed packet, mini shovel, flower, glove). Have students describe the object before pulling it out. Great for inferencing and describing.

These low-prep activities bring language to life while aligning with school-based goals. Plus, they offer built-in opportunities for collaboration with teachers, OTs, and PTs.
