Supporting Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports

Supporting Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) with your MTSS Framework

When PBIS is implemented with fidelity, PBIS brings a unified vision, language, and set of practices that:

  • Improve school climate
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Reinforce expectations with feedback
  • Increase equitable learning experiences
  • Reduce office referrals and suspensions

PBIS operates as part of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS), a framework that addresses behavior, school climate, and culture for all students.

  • Tier 1: Universal supports for all students.
  • Tier 2: Targeted interventions for 10-15% of students who need additional help.
  • Tier 3: Intensive interventions for 5% of students with significant needs.

This tiered structure provides individualized support for students with robust behavioral needs, ensuring that all students, including those with IEPs, autism, or developmental disabilities, receive consistent and tailored assistance.

Get Started with Tier 1 Evidence-Based Practices

Creating a positive and effective learning environment is essential for student success. Tier 1 evidence-based practices form the foundation of classroom management and instruction, benefiting all students. These strategies focus on designing structured environments, engaging learners in meaningful experiences, and encouraging positive behavior.

The checklist below highlights key practices educators can implement to enhance classroom management and foster a supportive learning atmosphere for every student.
